Today I did a good couple of hours out from the Ivanhoe side of the river and then part of it back on the other side. Was a good ride. One of the really nice things about mountain biking, as a newbie, is that it isn’t just about getting fitter to get faster, but improving your technical skills. It is so like cross country skiing in this respect. So the first bit was pretty ordinary but once I got on the fast tracks past Manningham Road things really flowed. Except.
Powering along, concentrating on the corners and so on. Shadows, exposed roots, dust. Immediately below I realised that it was a tiger snake crossing the trail. Right by my front wheel. I just yelled. I think it was “oh shit!”. Tried to lift my feet but of course they are clipped in. I watched it flatten itself as my wheels passed a few centimetres from its head. I didn’t want to know what it did after I’d passed (the thought it might have tried to strike was not something I wanted to know). I don’t like snakes.
I kept going and coming back through that bit I tried to go that bit faster.
I don’t like snakes.
