I’ve only being doing rides by myself for the last few weeks. Finally getting out at least three times a week (though still seem to only clock up about 6 hours a week on the bike which just isn’t nearly enough). Returned to Mt Pleasant Road the other day and just felt slow, heavy and just lacking anything beyond getting up the bloody climbs. In retrospect I’ve realised that my heart rate is lower up these things than usual, so I’ve got plenty there, just no speed. And without someone to ride against, there’s not much incentive to make it faster or harder. So I’m getting stronger, which is a good thing, and I reckon I must be improving aerobically too.
Balance though. How to find the time to get the K’s in the legs and be there for my wife, with an 18 month old child, and my two older kids from my first marriage. It really is a case of just scrimping a couple of hours whenever you can, and being flexible. It is a hard sport because it is time intensive, and expensive, and tends to take you away from a young family.
